I am in my second year of TSD 1-6 at SUNY Cortland. I will graduate in December 2019. I received a dual certification bachelor’s degree in early childhood and childhood education in 2016. I am a universal pre-kindergarten teacher at a school for students with disabilities. I co-teach with a special education teacher and work closely with many therapists. I am also a trained children mindfulness and yoga instructor. I not only practice yoga in my classroom, but I also teach yoga to children from the ages of 1-15 years old.

HEAR WHAT PARENTS HAVE TO SAY

Over the last year, our daughter Alayah has been learning mindfulness and yoga from Becca. It has been taught as an integration into her day at school and as a separate class over the summer months. As Alayah's understanding of yoga and skill in it has grown, so has her sense of self, balance, and confidence. She has so much more control over her body now. Furthermore, finding something she enjoys that she is also good at has allowed her the confidence to try further new things. There is a bravery and independence in her this summer that we have not seen in Alayah for a few years now. In a way, mindfulness and yoga have allowed her to be a kid again. She loves to show us the moves and poses she has learned; as well as teach them to us. There exists in her a hunger to learn more and to practice to get to a higher skill level. Becca has introduced to her a positive outlet for her energy as well as a safe environment for her to mentally relax. Alayah has experienced some pretty significant anxiety after receiving a life-threatening medical diagnosis. Mindfulness is so important in helping her overcome and control these anxieties. The integration of mindfulness and yoga continuously into her life has helped her do just that. There is a mental balance now with her new clean bill of health. The techniques she learns with Becca are immediately transmissible to her everyday life and they have helped her to positively reorient to the world around her when she begins to feel anxious. -K.
